Jersey Freeze will stay for another summer
FREEHOLD — If a western Monmouth County resident's or visitor's fall ritual includes visiting a local farm to pick apples and then stopping at Jersey Freeze for a treat, that tradition will be intact for least for one more year.
Bruce Blackmore, who owns the Jersey Freeze ice cream stand and restaurant at Route 9 and Manalapan Avenue, said a deal to sell his property to the Olive Garden Italian restaurant is still on, but is taking a bit longer to complete than he anticipated.
Blackmore previously said that Jersey Freeze, which has been in the same location for more than 50 years, would close at the end of the 2008 summer season. It now appears that the popular ice cream stand will be around a little longer.
In 2007 the Freehold Borough Zoning Board of Adjustment granted a use variance to Chesapeake Companies, Diversified Group LLC of Minnesota. The use variance will allow the applicant to build an Olive Garden restaurant on the 3.7- acre site at Route 9 and Manalapan Avenue where Jersey Freeze now sits.
A use variance was needed to permit the construction of a restaurant in a residential zone.
Jersey Freeze will be demolished to make way for the Olive Garden's parking lot.
The property where Jersey Freeze sits is in Freehold Borough and in Freehold Township. The ice cream stand was founded by Blackmore's father in the early 1950s as a summer operation. It later became a year-round restaurant and has been under Bruce Blackmore's ownership since 1980.
In addition to the Olive Garden, plans call for a bank to be built on the property. According to Blackmore, the bank which will eventually use the building is still pending.
Blackmore said the Olive Garden application must return to the Freehold Borough and Freehold Township planning boards for final site approval. He said he is hoping that will occur this fall.
Jeff Wurst, the project manager for Chesapeake Companies, said, "It is our intention to return to Freehold Borough and Freehold Township in the late fall for site plan approval and to the state Department of Transportation for required access permits."
The Olive Garden will feature a family dining experience, according to the applicant, and will accommodate 206 guests in the dining room and 30 in the lounge for a total of 247 seats.
Blackmore said he wants people to know that Jersey Freeze will be around a bit longer than planned.
"We're going to be here for another season, so don't lose your appetite for Jersey Freeze, which still has the best ice cream in the world," he said.
