FREEHOLD — A Freehold teenager was indicted Thursday on attempted murder and other charges related to gunfire outside a borough apartment complex in March.
A Monmouth County grand jury handed up the indictment charging Daquin Calhoun, 18, with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.
The charges stem from gunfire that erupted about 6:12 p.m. on March 5 at the entrance to the Rug Mill Towers apartment complex at 40 Jackson St. in Freehold, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin.
Police officers were dispatched to a report of gunshots, and their initial investigation revealed that an unknown individual had fired about four shots at a 17-year-old Freehold Township youth. All of the shots missed the target, authorities said.
Subsequent investigation identified Calhoun as the alleged shooter, authorities said. He was arrested on unrelated drug charges later that evening, police said. The following day, he was charged with the shooting.
If convicted of attempted murder, Calhoun would face up to 20 years in prison, and he would face up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted of second-degree aggravated assault. He would have to serve 85 percent of either of those terms before he could be considered for release on parole, under the state's No Early Release Act.
The other offenses carry potential prison terms ranging from 18 months to 10 years, with required periods of parole ineligibility because they involve a handgun.
"Calhoun's violent act on a public street endangered the whole community and could have had deadly consequences," Valentin said, while praising Freehold police for their swift apprehension of the defendant.
Calhoun remains in the Monmouth County Jail, Freehold Township, his bail set at $90,000.
He will be arraigned on the charges within the next 45 days, Valentin said.
