I thank you for the kind words, Marc...and I echo your sentiments as well. Ka19...since you and your neighbors all have your lawns done by a service, have any of you approached your neighbor and mentioned the idea to him? Heck, I would even go so far as to pool all of your neighbors together, pick one service for all your homes, and then barter a better rate from the landscaping company!!! This would make it easier on all of you, and make it more of a possibility for your neighbor as well (if financial restrictions are one of his concerns) Alright, I know we are a bit off topic, but there is some great discussion here. Andrew, your idea of pooling everyone together and using the same lawn service is a very good one. Besides the ability to barter down the cost, there is also the advantage of being able to have all of the neighborhood mowing done in one shot, leaving the rest of the week mower free for peace and quiet. That is a real advantage to those of us who have a deep appreciation for p and q. If the people in Ka19's area really want to grow a set, they could also make crystal clear that they will only use a lawn service that is hiring people legally and on the books. Setting the example in one area of town could be quite catchy. Also, Andrew, your reminder of being good neighbors and building community is a very good reminder and a point that should never be lost when dealing with potential problems around us.

This might be an idea the NPC can recommend to various property owners as we tackle neighborhood projects around time, though we would never want to be involved in actually brokering such arrangements.
From the landscaper's view, such an idea would be close to heaven. You would hope that the money and time saved in fuel expenses and travel time, could be passed on as savings to a group of local residents contracting for their services. Good thought.

Land scapers love being able to mow a bunch of lawns on one street. It is easier for them and less time consuming in loading and unloading their equipment. The lazy bums on my street who don't mow their own grass all use the same service. A lot of grass gets cut this way and the landscaper makes a nice chunk of cash in a very short period.

Of course, when I was a kid and cut yards, I charged the cheapest rate (inherited the rate from when my older brothers cut yards and passed their jobs onto me). It was also a duty (instilled by my father) to take care of a few neighbors in the area that were elderly or could not do heavy work on their own. On snowdays off from school, I had to shovel 4 driveways (my parents, 2 widows, and one elderly widower) before I could go out and make money. If they asked me how much, I would ask them to repay it in cookies or hot chocolate. Sometimes they caught up with me months later and forced a few bucks into my hand, but payment wasn't expected. It really was helping out your neighbor. But, I fear those days of looking out for each other is over. Random acts of kindness are as scarce as hens teeth.
