FREEHOLD — A national Baptist service organization will set its sights on Freehold next summer.
World Changers, based in Alpharetta, Ga., will bring junior high, high school and college students from across the country to Monmouth County from July 5 to 12, 2008, borough Administrator Joe Bellina said at a combined Borough Council workshop and regular meeting Sept. 17.
The group, which will set up shop at Neptune High School, is being sponsored locally by the Colts Neck Baptist Church. The students, who will be supervised by adults, will perform construction work such as painting or roofing homes in low-income areas, according to a World Changers news release.
In other matters, the council took the following action. All votes are unanimous unless noted otherwise. The governing body:
Appointed Barbara Wagner to the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission. Wagner, who replaces Tom Parke, is expected to serve until her term expires Dec. 31, 2009.
Approved the Spooktacular Halloween Hayride for Oct. 20 and the Spooktacular parade for Oct. 27.
Granted permission to AT&T Corp. to obtain space for transmission lines and access to poles with other utilities — particularly Verizon New Jersey Inc. — along, under and over public rights-of-way.
Authorized a $1,150 payment in Length of Service Award Program benefits for volunteer firefighters. Councilman Jaye Sims, a member of the Fire Department, abstained.
Authorized applying for a state Department of Environmental Protection forestry stewardship incentive program grant of approximately $24,200. The borough will match 25 percent of the total project amount.
Purchased a 1989 Ford L8000 Rescue Truck for $50,000 from Freehold Township. Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer voted no.
Designated James Newman as a substitute/alternate Municipal Court judge.
Appointed Dorothy Wright and James McAllister as full-time school crossing guards and Terence Motely as a part-time school crossing guard.
Granted permanent taxi driver's licenses to Robert Gambuzza of Manalapan, Juan Samuel Hinojosa of Freehold, and Guadalupe Hinojosa of Freehold.
