Public objection a good thing
I write in response to the Feb. 14 letter "Code compliance is panel's goal" in which Freehold Councilman Marc LeVine, who also serves on the Rental Property Advisory Committee, claims that I breached ethics by alerting the media to a proposal to require landlords to check on the immigration status of prospective tenants.
Hmmm. Why doesn't he remind everyone that HE is a committee member and that Counselman Levine is a non voting representative appointed by the Mayor? Ask his Chair if she thinks he breached ethics.
Alerting the media when nativists wish to quietly pass off recommendations that would make life difficult, if not impossible, for Latinos living in Freehold is a good thing.
I looked up Nativist. What an insult towards his committee:
na·tiv·ism (nt-vzm)
n.
1. A sociopolitical policy, especially in the United States in the 19th century, favoring the interests of established inhabitants over those of immigrants.
2. The reestablishment or perpetuation of native cultural traits, especially in opposition to acculturation.
And, what Latino's is he talking about? These are illegal aliens, who committed a crime in coming here and continue to break all sorts of laws, including non payment of taxes.
It is important to note that my letter objecting to several aspects of the Feb. 7 report by the advisory committee was issued the same day the report was made public. This way reporters could assess the report and my objections at the same time.
Same day! Mr. Illegal Advocate, your comments need TO FOLLOW your committee's report, not precede it. YOU SERVED ON THAT COMMITTEE. Who are you to separate yourself from your equals? Imagine if every committee person went off on their own and did their own thing? Chaos! Committee members are supposed to be equals. There is no asterisk next to your appointment. You put yourself above others and you are not a team player
Furthermore, our findings were publicly discussed at several meetings. The committee is a public body and its deliberations and conclusions are public. There was nothing secret that needed to wait for an appropriate time to be released.
YOU were not John Q. Public as a committee member. YOU were supposed to follow the protocols of your committee. The report was scheduled for 7:30 pm that night and by going to the press ahead of the presentation and without the committee's knowledge & approval, you did breach ethics.
It is my right to try and influence public opinion and debate ideas at a time of my choosing. I do not need the permission of anyone to do so. Only in totalitarian states is speaking out a "breach of ethics."
Not as an active Committee member it isn't. You had an obligation to work as a team, not as a loose cannon. YOU should not accept any future committee appointments from the Mayor if your true intent is only to act as an internal spy, who thinks it's OK to change the rules of the committee whenever you want to and without agreement from your fellow committee people. This is not how committees work.
YOU DID need permission from your committee and your chair to speak out of turn, in this matter. Want to do otherwise? Then stay off committees, read the newspapers like everyone else and write your angry whining, crybaby letters to the editor when you read things you don't like. You said it yourself. Everything in the report was public, so you could have waited before stealing the lime light.
Hey, big man! Some "totalitarian states" jail or execute committee members for Breach of Ethics. Fortunately, Freehold's leadership will do nothing to you, but Freehold's residents will surely consider your wrong actions for what they really are - way out of line.
But, that's OK. You play to a completely different audience in town, don't you?
